Satsang... the company of truth.
Monday, February 1, 2010 at 7:55PM Truth Company. Joining together as a community, a group, a collective, to enhance our capacity to love, feel, and be fully self expressed. For thousands of years humans have gathered for this purpose. Intention is activated, actualized, infact, according to several yogic texts, gathering in truth is one of the great doorways to inner freedom!

In sanskrit the term is Satsang. I've been considering the tradition of this ancient gathering. A sage, mystic, prophet, an enlightened being, and those present not only to partake, but to contribute. To receive words of truth and light as a means of identifying the untruth, misperception, suspicion, and doubt. To increase in hope, faith, and compassion. To reveal the essence, the sweetness, the divine within.

In 2005 I attended one such gathering. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama spoke in the end zone on a high school football field in a small town in Idaho. The vibration was so high in anticipation, and understanding, as we waited. People were so generous with one another. They rode bikes, waited patiently in line, space was respected, babies cried, the sun poured down, and we all just listened. Tears filled my eyes, not only because of the love I felt for him, but the sacredness of the space that stretched much further than the 10 yard line. There were sunburned faces, and tired children, and we were all given a white prayer scarf. There was an undeniable presence of beauty, and love.

In the reality of current crisis, such as the recent earthquake in Haiti, I believe Satsang is essential. We must gather as the enlightened beings we are becoming, as seekers of truth and light, to nourish and feed the whole. You may not feel your soul is enough, but I feel very confident that it is. We are reminded in the Bhagavad Gita ch.II vs 23-25 "The individual soul is everlasting, infinite, standing on the motionless foundations of eternity, unchangeable, immoveable, and eternally the same. Knowing this one must not grieve." This is what accompanies each of us in the "we space". Although we may not lead kirtan, or speak in front of thousands, we are the Satsang, the community of the spirit!
This week dedicate your practice to truly partake of this community of the spirit! Breathe for those who struggle for breath. Breathe for those who are not able to breathe fresh air. Raise your voice in OM for those who may not have the freedom to raise their own. Om for those whose voice was lost or taken. Enter each asana, each posture in such a way that you contribute to advancing peace rather than violence. Express truth, nonharm, nongreed, purity and joy. Hold space for your microcosm as you study and work and heal. Offer the same to the macrocosm. This generosity will change the world. There is a whole new level of responsibility, once we get how interconnected we are! There is also a depth, a richness, a truth, that has survived thousands of years.

A special invitation to attend one such gathering. This Friday, February 5th, 7pm-9pm. A community gathering to contribute to ease the suffering and bring hope to Haiti. Yoga Unveiled is one of the greatest films I have seen regarding yoga, its origins, impact, and truth. Please consider this invitation! Bring your family! Invite friends, especially the yoga curious! We will be screening the film, holding a silent Auction, and savoring the sweetness of community!
And a little Rumi to bless your week...
There is a community of the spirit.
Join it, and feel the delight
of walking in the noisy street
and being the noise.
Drink all your passion,
and be a disgrace.
Close both eyes
to see with the other eye.
Open your hands,
if you want to be held.
Sit down in the circle.
Quit acting like a wolf, and feel
the shepherd's love filling you.
Be empty of worrying.
Think of who created thought!
Why do you stay in prison
when the door is so wide open?
Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking.
Live in silence.
Flow down and down in ever
widening circles of being.
Ever widening circles of being...Yes!
Compassion in Action,
Jami
