Bhakti yoga is, in it's purest form, the devotional fire of the heart. The yoga of our personal relationship with God, Source, Divine, the Beloved. It is the practice of witnessing beauty in others and you. It is the expansion of your voice in mantra, and the lift of your heart in upward facing dog. It is the transformation from doing yoga asana, and taking breath, into a most sacred partnership of receiving breathing and offering each asana.

It is the way of love.

Bhakti Yoga is one of six systems of yoga revered throughout history as that which leads to self realization. The other paths of enlightenment are: Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kriya Yoga, and Raja Yoga.

Traditionally Bhakti Yoga requires that one devote themselves to chanting the names of the Deities, following a guru, meditating on the Divine, performing sacred rituals and puja, and reading/writing sacred poetry. It was the Bhagavad Gita, The love Song to the Lord that invited anyone to join this way of love. To love the Lord of Love. To Love Love.

The beauty of the six systems of yoga for modern day Bhaktas, is the union of paths. In the hatha system, asanas bring greater circulation of prana to the entire body. Strengthening the body for the tapas and discipline required in the fire of devotion. This circulation strengthens the heart muscle, the arteries and veins that nourish and remove impurities, and allow us to physically expand into our spiritual selves. This expansion creates a life of living the yamas and niyamas, because all beings are seen through eyes of love. Sacred asana, sacred life.

This week I invite all Bhaktis to let their love stream flow. Together we will ignite the heart fire and offer our asana with faith and courage. The courage to surrender. The faith to let go and let the beauty we love be our offering.

I've been giving the topic of bahkti some thought lately - what it means to me, what it means to others - and appreciate the timeliness of the subject blog in that regard. Jami, you identify it as the "devotional fire of the heart. The yoga of our personal relationship with God, Source, Divine, the Beloved." As one who has yet to develop such a personal relationship (or at least the awareness of), the question is where to direct this devotional fire of the heart? To the search through the practice?
